I would like to welcome you to St. Lawrence of Brindisi School. As you browse through our site you will find that the faculty and staff are passionate about teaching our children to be successful in all areas of their lives. We are able to do this because we are convinced that God has called us to accomplish this task. Emphasis is not only on the academics but also the spiritual. Students attend mass weekly, pray the rosary daily, and develop a keen sense of “giving back” with numerous service-learning projects. We are very proud of our students, families, the St. Lawrence of Brindisi School Community and their accomplishments. Enjoy your visit to our site and be sure to visit often.
Fr. Matthew G. Elshoff, OFM Cap.
In 1922, in Watts, California a special church was founded on Compton Avenue. Originally this church was named Most Holy Redeemer. Later the the order of the Capuchin Franciscans came from Ireland and took charge of the parish. They renamed the parish, Saint Lawrence of Brindisi after a Capuchin saint that was known for his intelligence, scholarly work, and miracles.
One of the first concerns of the new parish and the priests was education. With much hard work by the priests and the parishioners alike, some $40,000 was raised and Saint Lawrence of Brindisi Parish Catholic School was dedicated in 1924. Its mission and goals are to educate and give children of Watts a good future and a moral education. In 2008 the parish celebrated its 100th anniversary.
About the Capuchin Franciscans
The Capuchin Franciscans, a Roman Catholic religious order of brothers and priests, are inspired by the ideals of St. Francis. Francis was a unique and dynamic individual who lived life with a passion for peace, honesty and charity. While society was turning away from Christian values, Francis embraced the message of Christ and lived simply, serving the poor.
